Smoked Apple Pie – Delicious!

Apple pie is one of my all-time favorite pies, especially around the holidays. Cooking outdoors on the smoker is also one of my passions year-round. When you combine the two you are able to create something that your friends and family will rave about.

The pie crusts with the filling just before they are going to be added to the smoker.

This is a simple recipe that you can make quick, easy, and even let the little ones help with. Give it a try and I am sure your taste buds will be thrilled.

Delicious Smoked Apple Pie Recipe

You can make an apple pie in an oven, but if you add some smokey flavor to it, it will be even more amazing! I smoked this on the Weber Smokey Mountain for just about an hour and it was great!

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 1 hour
Additional Time 10 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup White Sugar
  • 1/4 Cup Flour
  • 2 Tablespoon Pumpkin Pie Spice
  • 1/2 Stick Room Temp Butter
  • 3 Pounds Apples
  • 2 9-inch Pie Crusts
  • Extra Crust For The Top

Instructions

  1. Preheat your smoker to 300 degrees. (An oven will work, but smoking this pie is recommended!) If using a smoker add your favorite wood (hickory, apple, and pecan will work well).
  2. Peel apples and cut them into small bite-size pieces. The smaller you cut them the quicker and easier it will be to cook tenderly.
  3. In a medium-sized mixing bowl add the sugars, flour, pumpkin pie spice, and butter.
  4. Mix thoroughly until all the ingredients are combined nicely.
  5. Spoon the mixed ingredients onto your 9-inch pie crusts. Just enough to cover most of the bottom of each pan.
  6. Add apples to each pie crust so that the apples are even to the top, or slightly above the top of the pan.
  7. Spoon the remaining mixed spice-flour mixture over the top of each pie.
  8. Place a layer of rolled dough on the top of the pie and give it a few slits so that the steam will be able to escape while cooking.
  9. Place in smoker and cook for 1 hour. Check frequently to make sure the temperature doesn't get too hot. Keep it between 275 and 325 degrees for the duration of the cook and at the 50-minute mark if needed turn down the heat slightly to avoid burning the crust.
  10. Place a knife thru the apples and when tender, they are done!
  11. Remove and let cool for a few minutes, then enjoy!

Notes

  1. Use good quality apples, I used granny apples for this recipe.
  2. You can use premade pie crusts found in the frozen section of your supermarket and rolls of dough for the top portion of the pie, or make your own pie crust!
  3. If your apples are not tender enough, but the crust already looks done, cut the heat in half to allow slow cooking while the apples get done.
  4. Serve with ice cream, it is so good! I like vanilla.
  5. Try matching the smoke with the pie! Applewood I am sure would be a great choice.
