SPG All Purpose Seasoning

SPG Seasoning

Use this mixture as a meat rub, for seasoning veggies, in soup, or just leave it sitting at the table for guests to use as an extra seasoning while enjoying their meal. It is a staple in my kitchen, and once you make it, it very well might be in your home as well.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Additional Time 20 minutes
Total Time 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 Cups Granulated Black Pepper
  • 1 ⅓ Cup Kosher Salt (I sometimes use fine sea salt and it works great too! Make sure it is fine).
  • ⅓ Cup Granulated Garlic
  • ⅓ Cup Paprika (Smoked, Spanish or Regular)
  • 2 Tablespoons Onion Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon Ground Cumin

Instructions

  1. Have a large bowl available for mixing all of the ingredients together.
  2. Add all the dry ingredients to the large mixing bowl.
  3. Using a wooden mixing spoon, mix the ingredients so that they are incorporated evenly throughout the bowl. You want to avoid having a large portion of one ingredient in one spot. An electric mixer will work well to help accomplish this, but start on low and slowly ease up the speed to avoid dust from the spices from leaving the bowl. This takes patience, do not rush it, and also mix for a lengthy period of time.
  4. Once you have the spices mixed together, using a funnel, place the homemade SPG into small jars or containers and store them in a dry area at room temperature.

Notes

SPG stands for Salt, Pepper, and Garlic. If you do not want to add extra spices such as onion powder, cumin, and paprika. It is best to simply add equal amounts of salt, pepper, and garlic and mix well. This will be a strict SPG version and will work great on your foods.

However, using the mixture in this recipe gives your seasoning an exceptional taste with the added spices on virtually any meat or veggie you are eating. Add it to pork, beef, chicken, and even seafood. It is great on fries, tater tots, and broccoli. That is why I call this SPG all-purpose seasoning. It truly is great on just about anything!

Place Next To Your Table Salt

This seasoning is such a great compliment to many dishes, it isn’t meant only for the cooking stages of your food. It is great after dinner is done as well.

My wife and kids are always grabbing for this SPG All Purpose Seasoning while sitting at the table. Whether they are eating steak, sausage, eggs, or mashed potatoes, they seem to always want to sprinkle a little bit of their favorite foods.

In fact, it has replaced the use of standard salt and pepper on many dishes. Instead of adding salt and pepper, this all-in-one seasoning will take your food to the next level.

Use It As A Rub

In addition to using the seasoning to flavor your favorite dishes, it can be used as a complete rub as well! Use it on ribs, brisket, pork shoulders, and more.

First, add some kind of binding agent of your choosing. I usually use either mustard or olive oil. This will give the seasoning something to stick to.

  1. Add your binding agent (mustard, olive oil, butter, etc.), then rub it all over the piece of meat you planning to cook.
  2. Add the seasoning liberally all over the meat including the sides, edges, and crevices. You want to cover it as best as you can.
  3. Let it sit while you prepare your smoker or grill, then place it on the cooker.

Seafood

A lot of people don’t think about all-purpose seasoning when it comes to seafood, but it can be a great addition to your favorite scallop, shrimp, or lobster dish as well. Obviously, you may want to reach for some cajun seafood seasoning when originally prepping the dish, but if you don’t have any on hand, this is an excellent alternative.

You can also add it to the final seafood dish for even more flavor. There is no limit to what you can use this seasoning on.
